RENTAL TIPS & FAQs

Drive Yourself: For many visitors to our area, renting a vehicle you drive yourself is the most effective way to enjoy the majestic San Juan Mountains. Take your time. Stop when and where you want. Explore ghost towns, old mines, alpine meadows and fields of wildflowers. Cool off in a waterfall. Wait patiently for the perfect wildlife picture! The San Juan mountains have the most back country roads above 10,000 feet in the United States.

Our Facility: We have the largest Jeep® and tour facility in Ouray with 8000 s.f. of shop, kitchen, and office space. We perform our own vehicle maintenance according to Jeep® specifications.

Maps: We provide mapping services or you can purchase one of the many tour books we offer. Many guests like to take a guided tour first then go back out in a rental vehicle to spend more time at specific places.

Pets: Are allowed in standard Jeeps® and UTVs. If you are bringing a pet please check with us in advance. Pet fee charge is $25 (not a cleaning fee). Must be returned pet free.

What to wear: The San Juan mountains are notorious for instant and frequent weather changes. It can be dry and sunny one minute and raining, or even snowing, the next. Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing as needed. Wear sturdy shoes; sandals don’t work well on rocky, muddy terrain. We suggest a small backpack with gloves, extra socks, rain-proof jacket, and a hat or other head covering.

What to bring: High altitudes can cause sunburn and dehydration. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water. You might want to bring some trail mix or snacks – there are no restaurants up on the mountain. If you have a small child in diapers please bring a trash bag.

Follow the rule: Pack it in, pack it out. Leave nothing behind but footprints!

Cell phones: Service is spotty up on the mountains. Some systems work better than others. If you are concerned about a health emergency or need to be in contact with someone not on your trip please check that you have cell service before you venture too far into the wilderness.
